Hi Tom

What a great looking veggies! Your growing season has begun.
That Table Dainty looks so healthy, you will love them. Start picking them from small sizes to any other size, they are any way good. This way you will also find out how do you liked them best.

You can probably use the Butterstick and the Dainty together in a dish with some tomatoes that you will be getting them soon.

Bananas, cucumbers and Adenium are looking good too!

It is a wonderful cool morning isn't it? Tom, your garden looks amazing! Your pictures, that settles it; I am going to dig up my cukes and put them in pots...

It's gorgeous outside!!!! Tom - your garden looks very happy!!!

Wondering if the Esperanza seedling (the yellow flowering shrub) survived? Mine did not, so if yours didn't, I can give you some seed pods to try again.

The banana trees you gave me are doing very well by the way!! Thanks again! :)

RE: What a lovely morning!

lovely, tom! my cukes, which were doing so well, got covered in stink bugs, which did the poor plants in... you having bug problems?

i'm convinced that containers are the way to go for the cucurbits in the fall/winter... too much soil-born pm/dm this time of the year to grow them in the soil. i had a lovely gala from you, with fruit set... then the downy mildew hit and killed it in a matter of days.

Tom
You and Silvia have the prettiest veggie gardens. Can't imagine that bugs would dare to tread there.
I have tiny little tomatoes (Stupice) due to the cooler weather allowing fruit to set. Exciting!
My double mahoi is in fruit also but they look smaller than yours. No surprise there.

Silvia - I only put in the one bucket of Butterstick, the other three are Black Beauty, another Cousa and Costata Romanesco. I'm going to start three more Buttersticks tomorrow since I just have not found another producer like it. So far, Table Dainty is beating Trailing Green Marrow, but we'll see....

SB50 - if you go into pots it's vital you don't use ground soil or topsoil. You must have a fast draining potting mix and supply inorganic fertilizer as bacteria as nitrogen fixers in container soils are minimal due to the container soil heat generated here in Florida. IF you decide to do this, this reading is a must to understand container soil dynamics.

SPF - Esperanza was doing great until I decided I wanted to move them all into a better draining potting mix, killed the two I was most impressed with, the one you gave me on the green trellis survived and is putting out beautiful purple flowers (my favorite color), and the vines have outgrown the 4' pole I put in the ONE GALLON container I put it in, YIKES, I've got to do something with it tomorrow! :-) I will want to try the others again. I'm coming over your way next Friday to visit with two other GW'ers within a stones throw of each side of you so if you want to try and other seeds drop me a line.

Michael - no bug problems. Sorry for your PM/DW problems. I did note some mildew on the leaves at the bases but this is a very fast draining soil so all I had to do was cut away the leaves near the ground to allow for good sunlight and airflow and that solves my problem. Of course I could not do that with all this heat until we finally started cooling down.

Denise - oh yes, I do have bug problems. Remember that the plants closest to the lake are only 8' from the water, and the rest range from 10-12' from the water, while this protects me from frost it's also a bug haven! I have to spray regularly. Regarding the bananas, I do the same thing Silvia does, the previous years container mixes go in the banana boxes, they seem to love it.

Now, if I could only grow something besides okra, yardlong's and bananas in the summer life would be complete :-) I'm counting on my Penjing to suffice during the summer when I can't grow veggies. Ohmmmmmmmmmmm....

Oh, Tom, your garden looks absolutely splendid! Everything looks healthy and happy. I so admire your setup. Obviously, a great deal of thought has gone into creating it. Looks like you're very close to a harvest on many counts. Enjoy the cooler weather.

I love looking at GW pics! Your setup is so neat. Are the butterstick open-polinated?

Thanks folks, the garden looked so ratty this summer that I'd forgotten how nice it gets once we cool down here.

I'll need everyone's help from June through August. Knowing I won't be successful with veggies during the summer I want to grow various vining flowers on the trellises so I'll need some suggestions. Would it be possible to grow perennials in containers and then just cut back the vines and move the containers during the veggie seasons?

Felix, it won't be long before you'll be eating your own Mahoi's ;-)

Anna, we're eating some KW pole beans now but the heat was so hard on this first trellis that I'll probably replace it after only a months production. The second trellis I started last month with some of Christine's rattlesnakes will be ready close to Thanksgiving :-)

Miranda, unfortunately, it's an F1 hybrid.

Hi Tom,

There you go again showing me how to grow things in containers! :>) Guess I am going to have to start hunting those pine fines again.

While I was in Eleuthra for a week, the stink bugs totally destroyed my squash and cukes! Could not believe it. What is your spray schedule and with what?

My first Brandywine was about totally destroyed by ants when I got home, but the 2nd was very good last night!

Only wound while working there this time was a very heavy tape measure was dropped about 10 feet and hit my toes, yikes did it smart and is black and blue but not broken. No I did not have on steel toe shoes, just my sandals :>(

Glad you made it back safely Bernie, I think you'd better start wearing a safety helmet from now on. I'm sure glad that tape measure didn't hit you in the head!

Sorry to hear the garden didn't fair so well while you were gone. I don't have much trouble with stink bugs but maybe the just don't like the Green Cure. I spray once a week with BT one day, then Green Cure the next. Lots of folks just use either bicarb or 10% milk as a preventative for PM/DM, I'm sure folks will come along with some suggestions soon.

Did you check with ProSource One for the fines?

RE: What a lovely morning!

If the tape had hit me in the head, probably would not have phased me since I'm so hard headed!

Green Cure, where do you purchase?

Our Pro Source shut the doors 2 weeks ago :>(

birds got my first brandyboy today and now believe they got the first brandywine last week and ants finished it off. Had our first Cherokee purple tonight! Guess I'm back to bagging them tomorrow.
