I thought it might be. I haven't seen any blooms as of yet.

Would the stems/branches be reddish? If it were firebush?

Yes, they would be reddish. There are different types of firebush, but in my experience they get very big and once established are very difficult to control. I really like them because they are favorites of hummingbirds and butterflies, especially the Zebra Longwings.

I'm gonna guess allamanda since its sprawliness reminds me of a purple one I had when I lived in Zone 10.

I'm not agreeing on firebush. I know there are supposed to be other Hamelias in the state of Florida, but they're rather non-descript with nothing going for them. I suppose its possible this is one of those other Hamelias, but it looks nothing like my Hamelia patens shrubs. The leaf and stem structure looks all wrong to me. Plus I would find it quite surprising that a H. patens of this size didn't have flowers, even my young one that is only about 2' tall has been covered in blooms since spring. That said, perhaps ya'll are referring to another type of firebush? Common names tend to jump from plant to plant more than butterflies sometimes.

I will upload pictures of my two H. patens tomorrow for comparison.

I have seen no blooms as of middle August when we moved in. It's huge! Though there is similarity to firebush, I just doubt it. If it doesn't bloom I'd like to remove it. Just to large and precious a partyly/sunny spot in my yard that is at the front of my property. I'd sure like to ID it before I would remove it.

A firebush in this spot would be welcome news.

I finally got a chance to take a pix of mine.

It's in filtered sun and yes it can get unruly.

I have clipped it back at least three times and now
notice some volunteers in the immediate area.
I'll dig them up and pot them. I'm sure someone
will want to try it.
