That looks like a dembrobium and I have one that did the same thing. Grew out into full sun and it is fine and blooms in the sun. Go figure!!

Katkin, it is a denbrobium. I'm glad to hear that your orchid is fine in full sun. I think I will leave it be then unless it starts to look burned.

Mine was under the pergula and grew out the slats into the full sun. I didn't even notice it until it bloomed. None of the leaves appeared to be scorched by the sun. :o)

One person grew a bunch of Dens at the bottom of/in the middle of a cluster of palms. It looked great. I think I'll try it next spring with the big canes.

Vandas require a lot of sun, also Cattleyas and Dendrobiums and Reed Stems... most of the Phaleanopsis need shade and are suited to indoor culture, that's why you see them in the big-box stores, suited to the coffee-table. Vandas also require lots of moisture, whilst the Catts need to dry out. I didn't know zilch abt. orchids until I went to the Orchid classes at Sunken Gardens here in St Pete, where Michael Polin of Art Stone Orchids has Forums, he demonstrates potting, etc. and lectures on culture.... Also if you Google the name of the orchid, type-- a lot of info. comes up.... learn abt. where the orchid grows naturally, native stuff, and that tells you what to do w/them.....some need dry, some need lots of moisture and misting, some need full sun, some need shade.... very interesting, I'm just learning how to keep them alive...sally
