This question has been asked before - my mom lives in Treasure Island, on the waterfront & has a pomegranate shrub that my dad planted over 20 years ago - it seems to do fine w/ little extra care, & if it were properly cultivated, I imagine it doing great. She gets @ least 6-8 large fruits every year from the remaining plant (there were originally 2). Sorry but I've no idea what variety; flowers are the classic red/orange & fruits get very large & are pretty sweet. I believe he got them from Park Seed, if that's any help.

Somebody else nearby is growing pomegranate as well.

Thanks carolb. Did your mom's tree always only get 6-8 fruits per year, even when it was young? I thought that pom trees usually get anywhere from 30-150 fruits per tree.

Not a tree - a shrub, never got too big, maybe because of the salty sand it's growing in. As I said, the plants were neglected;there was little fertilising/pruning, etc. - guessing better cultivation might've made a difference.

After looking @ Park's offerings, thinking it may be the variety 'Wonderful'.

I grew up in Clearwater right around Sunset Point and US 19. There was a pomegranate tree right on the edge of our yard. I'm not sure how long it was the, but I lived in that house for 23 years. I remember it always being there. It produced a ton of fruit. I remember eating many a pomegranate when I was a kid. They can definitely live and thrive in that area.

I have 2. One produces like crazy and the other has never set fruit. (If it doesn't set by next year i'ts OUTTA there!) Anyway- I'll have cuttings when I go to Silvia's. It's one of the few things I know I can bring this time. (See crazy critter post. LOL) These are hardy, easy to care for and require little to no intervention besides trimming after harvest to keep it the size you want it. My oldest bush/tree is aproximately 5 years old and While I got a few fruit the first few years it is giving a good size load of fruit last year and is setting fruit as we speak.

Barbie, I want one cutting, please. Your pomegranates are awesome! Remember the huge and healthy tree that I had? well, after 5 years and no fruit, it went out.

The cutting I got from you last fall failed to root. I hope to get another cutting from you so that I can try again. Is your son coming? It was nice to see some youth at the party.

Yes. He will be coming along as well. He enjoys spending time with me still, so I'm taking full advantage. At 16 I expect any day now he'll not want to 'hang out with mom' ;-)
