 o
black flies on my tomatoes?

I have small black bugs with transparent wings on my tomato plants. Roughly the size of gnats. And a couple plants that were healthy yesterday were wilted and unhappy this morning, like something's sucking the life out of them. I sprayed everyone down with water, hoping to wash them off.
Other ideas?

Susannah, I think you have tomato black fly.
If you do, I think it's an aphid.
Some people use soap sprays, etc for them.
Does not work for me, I use malathion.

Try this link, it has a picture of one.

yep, that's them. Thanks corrie. I've lost one plant, though I don't seem to have much of an infestation. I'll hit them with soap tonight and maybe again tomorrow. Then I go to DC for a week and they will probably all die. The house sitter is going to have enough just handling the pets. Ah well. I've got a bunch of babies started. Just means my friends won't get nearly as many plants as they were expecting - and my season will be quite a bit later and shorter.

I think neem oil will work for them. also good for a lot of other pests too.

Just wanted to update: I sprayed with soap. And i really coated top and bottom of every leaf, lying down under my tomatoes to get the undersides of leaves.
And it worked!
I came back from my parents house for a week and every tomato that was alive when I left is thriving now. The soap worked. I was lucky that the temp dropped and it rained. And my house sitter watered the tomatoes once during the week. So if they were weak from the stress of aphids, they weren't stressed by heat or lack of water while I as gone.
Let's hear it for soap!
And thanks for the id and advice!
