Just got home from running errands and found strawberry plants at Target for $1.25 ea. I have never grown them and did not originally intend to grow strawberries but..................

Any help would be appreciated. Are they:
Better in pots or in the ground? I have two of those decorative white concrete planters and was thinking of using those.

They are called "Quinault" everbearing.

TIA!!

Hi
Was hoping some more experienced grower would chime in.
have grown them for many years but badly lol. The best were june bearers using the mound or planter method aiming at Dec ,march as most productive times.
Everbearers tend to produce offsets rather than fruit and have found no cultivar that will make it through a 10 summer so everbearing won't work.
They do need very rich soil with constant source of moisture so I always opted for pots or better tiered beds.
The commercial growers use mounds in rows covered with black plastic .
They make fantastic winter hanging baskets Just don't expect to corner the market lol
Good luck gary

I agree the June bearers work best in the Southern areas. If you don't keep them from drying out in the summer you won't have any plant the following year. I am in zone 9 here in Texas and they do fine in our area. Maybe you should check with your extension agent for what variety is best for your area those plants just may not work for and and you would find you are just throwing money away. I raised them down near the Coast and one year I was eating Strawberries in December because of that winter being very warm, in fact that year it was too hot to plant in March.

Hi
Good suggestion check out the U/florida website tons of info on cultivars ,methods for the various zones.
They are a huge commercial winter crop so there are ways for sure lol.
My best crops were going to the U pick farms using this method .Eat two, one in basket. Don't try bolting from the pay stand they sick the dogs on you lol. Get a FANTASTIC crop with this method.lol Let us know how you do, .To my mind they are one of the very few temperate plants worth growing!! gary
