Kohlrabi question

I am growing kohlrabi and I don't know how to tell when the bulb part is ready. The plants are getting pretty large and I have been using the leaves in salads, cooking the leaves in stews and soups; but I can't tell if the root/bulb part is ready. Anyone have any good recipes for this?

The root bulb is ready when it's the size of a good sized turnip. It will be above ground, though. Kohlrabis are tricky to grow, in my experience, both here and in the west. Often they just won't bulb up. It has (probably) to do with how big they are when you set them out, or how the warm/cool/warm weather systems go through. If you seed them in the garden directly, be sure to thin them well - 6" is close if you want them to get fat. And when you find a surefire system to get them to make bulbs, Pleeze post it here, because I love kohlrabi, and I have such a time getting them to produce (since the first time I planted them, when they sucked me in by flourishing and being yummy!) Recipes? as in to eat? Peel, dice, saute with leeks and peas, or mix with diced potatoes, or chunk into soups, or, the Victory Garden cookbook has a great chicken/chick pea/ kohlrabi stew (or was that turnips? - you can substitute those two easily!) Good growing! Eileen

Eileen, I planted them from seed. I hope they bulb up...if not I still like the leaves. Oh well, maybe i will just grow what grows well and leave the others alone. Thanks for the info. I don't know what is wrong with my cukes. They are growing really slow and look terrible. Everything else is doing well. Maybe I will try some liquid fertilizer.

Eileen, they are starting to bulb up...I put in more seeds a few days ago. Thanks again.

I have never picked the leaves until they are ready to harvest, which can be anytime from when they get the size of a golf ball on as they get too old they are very woody instead of crisp and sweet.

This is HORRIBLE. I planted it last year out of curiousity. I had a bumper crop. They were as big as golf balls to tennis ball size. I peeled it anf placed it in the freezer. We never used it because the cook said they are bland. A few months ago the cook complained they smell funny. All went to the trash while "cleaning the freezer" Now it seems the cook just did not know how to prepare the darn things. I cant fire the cook - Alimony is too painful. I shall just let myself drown in my misery.

Jay, sorry to hear that. I use the bulb part and leaves mostly raw cut up in salads. They are good cooked though. I have never tried freezing them.
