I believe it is a dahoon. The trees are a Fl native and are on the protected list. They often look scraggly but give it time and it will fill out nicely. You may have to do a little trimming to get it started. If your tree has berries you have a female. Be patient, it will turn out fine. It will take wet conditions and I hope you loosened he root ball before planting.

Thank you. I'll read more about dahoon to see what makes it the happiest. I did loosen the root ball slightly and amended the soil a little bit and mulched. I'll have to be diligent about watering, too. This isn't the wettest spot.

I don't think it's Dahoon. Dahoon is supposed to be entirely spineless, but I see some occasional spines on those leaves. I say it's East Palatka.

Whatever they are, I planted a second one in fall 2012 because it looked like the trunk of the first was almost girdled by a mowing service (and they did that to several other trees and shrubs which subsequently died). But it survived and they are also suckering close to the first trunk, so maybe they are Dahoon.

Too bad they are such scrawny specimens but I couldn't find other tree hollies locally. Maybe they'll fill out? But for now I am letting them grow.
