Yes, balsam pear (aka bitter melon) for the first.

The second I don't know, but it is HORRIBLE. I live on Hutchinson Island next door to a preserve tract and those awful things came in with the sod the county insisted on putting down to make mowing the swales easier (and also to kill as many of the native plants as possible, I guess). It and poison ivy have pretty much driven out all the natives in large beachside areas (the ones the grass didn't strangle). The flowers stink, too.

oh! Did not know they were invasive here. Haven't seen poison ivy that I can recall. There's a lot of what looks like a ground-vining purple morning glory all over the place.

The morning glory thing could be railroad vine (ipomoea) if it's near the water.

@writersbock: yes that's out though now the flowers look more petunia like.

2nd plant is one of the Nicker Beans..Caesalpinia sp.

Yellow Nicker Bean-yellow seeds, Gray Nicker Bean-dark gray seeds

The 2nd one is Caesalpinia major, Nickerbean. Its a sprawling vine-shrub and is a FL native. It is an important plant in coastal regions and dunes for erosion control and dune building.

Thanks, Eric. But the one around here doesn't vine. It's a small tree that is taking over and driving out all the palmetto scrub in the beach areas where it was introduced in the sod. Any ideas?

Thanks, oldned. I'll have to get a close look at the seeds. Well, if it's the gray nickerbean that would explain why I see so many more hairstreaks around here this year. I still think it's obnoxious, and it's never been around here before in the 14 years I've lived here. There are many plants, like castor bean, virginia creeper, and poison ivy, that have appeared in the preserve area since they started digging and sodding,

Good to hear it's native as well. It was definitely vining, though branched out like a crawling tree. :)

Virginia creeper is a pain.

A lot of work has gone into the Robinson Preserve site. This was formerly a private farm that had been untended for years. Many volunteer and paid hours clearing as much non-native vegetation and putting in native plants. Enjoy the park - we do!
