RE: ssmittee papaya pics

HMMMM SO GOOD I have been picking them just as you see them and just leaving them on the table or counter to ripen.
I cut one tonite that was completely yellow, it was a full 4 pounds which is what most of the large you you see are running,
I have been on food network and a dozen or more sites lookng for recipes..for jam and chutney and syrup and what ever. Even if I give half away,
that still gives me 50 or 60 lbs of fruit...
Oh buy the way we ate the whole thing for dinner tonite, 5 of us and it was soooo good.
Thanks for posting the pics for me ...I couldnt figure it out and I really wanted to share so you would know I was not telling a whopper. This little tree was 23'' TALL and the first year it froze to the ground.
Then in the spring it came up and grew just to the top of the 4 foot fence it had 10 blooms and one little fruit it never ripened because we had a freeze and there it went again froze to ground level. Nothing in site, then this spring up it came again. With tons of blooms and I sent my little granddaughter out to pic okra...She asked me what okra was and I told her those long green things.
Now You must know I am handicapped and dont get out side very much and had NO idea the papaya where there.
So here she comes (age 12) carring the dozen little green things just like I told her to pick...Only they were papayas...I almost fell over. I asked where she got them and she told me the front yard, That is when I went and looked. I actually used most of them grated in green salad.. Oh by the way the okra was in the side yard.
It was AFTER that that I counted the 35 that was still left on the tree.

RE: ssmittee papaya pics

By the way I pulled about 25 branches off so I could see the fruit..that is why I didnt know they were there. The trunk was completely hidden by the follage. If anyone Has some recipes for preserving papaya. Like jam or jellie. I would sure love it..I dont know anything about papaya trees. Will it do it again next year or is it a one time thing. Will it die now that it has produced this load of fruit. I sure would like to know. js4jc2day@hotmail.com for recipes if you dont want to post them THANKS AGAIN SILVIA...

RE: ssmittee papaya pics

Wow! I've never seen a papaya grow before. Very cool. I buy little dried bits for my parrot for a treat. We'll have to grow that for him. Chop it, dehydrate it, it'll keep a few months.

Janet

The easiest way for you to enjoy your papayas later on when you don't have them is to cut them up in chunks and freeze them in ziploc bags in individual portions. When using later you can mix the chunks in a blender with water and little bit of sugar and make papaya water, this is common in other countries. You can also blend the chunks with milk or yogurt, and make a smoothie. Add honey, maple syrup or anything you like as a sweetener.

Cathy

I also have an african gray parrot and she likes fresh, chopped fruits and hot rice when I make it. :o)

RE: ssmittee papaya pics

Hi Janet,

I guess you have some seeds you could share LOL!

How about email me an address and I'll send SSE to you.

We are enjoying some small ones, but typically the larger ones are better I think.

RE: ssmittee papaya pics

Bernie I threw out about 5 potted papaya plants this last weekend. The seeds usually grow from the ones I eat. I will make sure I save a plant for you and will contact you when it is ready.

Hi Jay,

Yea , we usually grow some from papaya we buy, but have not started any for a while. My wild ones never make it, rabbits :>(
I have to get one well along and transplant to get one to maturity. Would like to grow some as large as the pics.

RE: ssmittee papaya pics

Hi Jay

Would you like to try some papaya seeds from Jamaica? If so, send me an email. They are about 5 feet and small size but the flavor is one of the finest that I tasted.

Hi Bernie

The same offer is for you, if you are interested. Now, if you like other type of papayas I have a Brazilian and other from South America also.

Tom said that you were on the islands. Did you try any good papayas over there?

Would papaya grow in zone 9a? If so, would anyone like to trade for something that I have? I am looking for a papaya that would be on the smaller (dwarf) side as we do not have much space. Thanks

RE: ssmittee papaya pics

Janet

Wash the papaya seeds in a small strainer, let them dry in a paper plate for a day or two.

When you receive the self stamped addressed envelopes from anybody interested, put the seeds in a small bag, if you don't have that, put them in a wax paper or just any light plastic wrap.

Think about the weight of the envelope, so don't put too many seeds. After anybody successfully grow one, they can save their own seeds.

Also do you know the name of your papaya, and where did you get it? It sounds like a good variety.

RE: ssmittee papaya pics

I bought it a Lowes or Walmart.. and I thought it was a red something. I remember thinking the fruit would be red on the out side I is a bright pretty coral inside. Sorry i had no Idea I would get fruit I just liked the folage and It was a "florida" tree for $5.00 I had just arrived from Washington State 4 or 5 weeks before. I was so proud of my little tree and was devestated when it "died" when it froze. I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW IT FROZE ANYWHERE IN FLORIDA. I tried to grow a coconut palm lol it is only cold hardy to 40 degrees and that is a stretch lol. I tried twice HOPE that helps, even a little oh and thanks for posting the pics for me. I opened a photo bucket account for next time.

Seeds are really supposted to be mailed in a bubble envelope. There are instructions on the seed exchange forum. Regular envelopes go through the rollers at the post office and crush the seeds, especially the big ones. Bubble envelopes are hand stamped. It costs more to do it that way, but you are paying for the service received. I personally don't use plastic of any kind as some seeds will get moldy with our humidity. I put the seeds in a small paper envelope. Paper will absorb the moisture. :o)

 o
RE: ssmittee papaya pics

I think you can write: "Please Handstamp" on the envelope and they will not crush the seeds. At least in the good Ol' daz

RE: ssmittee papaya pics

I am just trying to make it easy for Janet since she did said she is handycapped, mailing a few seeds in anything will be easy for her. However when anybody gets the seeds they can put them in whatever they liked or even plant them right away.

I do get a lot of my seeds in plain envelopes, no harm done. Trudi from the tomato forum always ask for self stamped address envelope to send the seeds requested. I just got my request yesterday and everything looks good. Her website gets millions of hits daily and she does mail different size seeds in small plastic bags.

And the big word here is that her organization is non-profit, so anything she does have to be inexpensive.

Janet

I am looking forward to more pics from your garden in the future, little by little you can learn. Maybe your daughter can help you writing you the steps to use the photobucket. And don't be discouraged, in the beginning it is not easy, but you will learn.

And congratulations on your papaya, for a beginner, that is great!

I didn't mean to upset anyone only to tell you how it is done on the seed exchange on GW. Most people there will not trade with you if you don't use a bubble envelope. I traded there for years. Everything is done by machines at the PO now and the bubble envelopes are separated from the rest by machine, no reads hand cancele. Small seeds like tomatoes don't seem to be bothered but bigger, harder seeds like beans will be crushed and useless. I know many people use the little plastic bags and the seeds arrive fine, but I have had many arrive full of mold and useless. :o)

RE: ssmittee papaya pics

Dont worry. when you get old and deal with a lot of pain and disabilites, you develope thick skin.
I will do the very best I can..I love plants and seeds and would not intentionally be careless.

RE: ssmittee papaya pics

Janet

From one of my favorite books, this recipe is for you.

Island papaya pineapple conserve with rum

1 lime
2 papayas, peeled and finely chopped
1/2 cup crushed pineapple with juice
1/2 cup of water
4 whole cloves
1 cinnamon stick about 4 inches long, broken
2 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup chopped dried apricots
2 tbsp finely chopped candied ginger or cristallized ginger
1 tbsp rum

1. Remove thin outer rind from lime with a vegetable peeler or zester, chop finely and place in a medium stainless steel or enamel saucepan. Remove and discard remaining white rind from lime; chop lime pulp into small pieces.

2. Add lime pulp, papaya, pineapple, water, cloves and cinnamon stick to a saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat, reduce heat, cover and boil gently for 10 minutes or until fruit is tender. Remove and discard cloves and cinnamon stick.

3. Stir in the sugar, apricots and ginger. Return to a boil, reduce heat and boil gently, uncovered, until mixture will form a light gel, about 25 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in rum.

4. Ladle into sterilized jars and process.

Makes 3 1/2 cups

What I usually do is to keep some in the refrigerator and the ones to eat later in the freezer.

I also like a good papaya salsa.

And Freya, you make the best eggrolls in Florida! I am sure that you have some good recipes for papayas.:o)

RE: ssmittee papaya pics

THANK YOU IT LOOKS YUMMY. I have two 3 lb papaya's that should be ready for Turkey day.
So hopefully the first of next week I should have seeds ready to mail, and two more, about 4 or 5 days later.

I think I am going to make the recipe you sent me with those.. I have picked 10 of the green ones.
I Pick them as soon as there is the tinyest spot of yellow on them ...and they have ALL ripened beautifully, and are sooo good.

Now as I understand it, this will be the only crop I will get from this tree. What will happen will it just die?

I will definately start myself some from the seeds each year so I will always have one bearing fruit on the third year...I plan to have some at one year, some at two years old and some at three years old.

Thanks to all of you for all your advice and help..I hope you have wonderful results with your seeds.
SSmittee
Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

( I never use Janet, ALL my friends call me Ssmittee)

RE: ssmittee papaya pics

Hi, Silvia,

Thanks for the compliment on my eggrolls :o)

I do not have recipes for the ripe papaya...I have not experienced growing them; the only ones we had are the store bought ones and it is eaten as soon as it ready. The green papaya, I have the recipe that I sent you (chicken tinola). I am waiting for SSmittee(Janet) to send me some papaya seeds so that I can try planting papaya.

Regards,

Freya

RE: ssmittee papaya pics

Hi Freya

Let me know when you are back so I can go and visit you. And your chicken tinola sounds delicious, and I will be making soon. I have the green papaya and the hot pepper leaves. I am sure it is going to be another winner.

And yes your eggrolls are delicious! Cheryl was asking me me the other day for your eggrolls that I had it in the freezer. I said too late, I ate them all. lol

I will be making the ones from the recipe that you gave me and I hope that I can make as good as yours.:o)

I had ripe papayas as a child so big that you need the entire family to eat them. I like the ones that are serving size like the Hawaiian ones.

Good luck with your next plantings!

RE: ssmittee papaya pics

Steve

One day I will make an eggroll party and you will be invited to cook with us.

That is how we did the cookie party, everyone participated in the baking, we had couples making different recipes.

Because we had a good amount of people, at the end they all got to take home an assortment of cookies.

Before the cooking we had healthy snacks, the tatsoi salad, fresh cut veggies with a homemade hummus dip and a small homemade pizza.

RE: ssmittee papaya pics

Hi, Silvia,

I will try to be at your eggroll party. We can make the filipino, chinese and vietnamese at one session. Please tell Cheryl I'll make more eggrolls and send a separate pack for her when you come visit. Hope that you will try the chicken Tinola. You can use your green papaya and pepper leaves.

For the eggroll party, hope that it will be after January 7th. As you know, we are spending "family" time in NOVA...today, it snowed since this morning. Too much mess to clean up tomorrow :o(
I miss Land O'Lakes and my tiny garden.
Keep warm!

Steve,

Please send me your e-mail address for the recipe.

Freya

RE: ssmittee papaya pics

Hi Freya

Don't worry, we will make the eggroll party when you are available, you are the expert.:o)

Thank you for the offer on the eggrolls for Cheryl. All the month of December will do Christmas activities and cookies, we do that every year.

Enjoy your "White Christmas" and see you when you come back.

Steve

I think Freya is your neighbor in the Land O' Lakes area, she can be our instructor in all things Asian. We are lucky to have her on the forum and as a friend.

And you and the wife will be invited.

re: ssmittee papaya pics update oct 2010

FIRST OF ALL I MUST USE CAPS I SUFFERED A STROKE AND CANNOT SEE SMALL LETTERS PLEASE FORGIVE ME. I RECEIVED A LETTER TODAY FROM SOMEONE WHO SAW THE PICS AT THE BEGINNING OF THIS POST AND WANTED SEEDS FROM THE CURRENT CROP. i HAVE SOME FROM LAST YEAR BUT THEY ARE QUITE SHRIVELED DOES THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE? I SENT OUT SEVERAL PACKAGES OF SEEDS LAST FALL DID ANY ONE PLANT THEM AND DID ANY OF THEM GROW? MINE FROZE DIED TO THE GROUND AND DISSAPPEARED FROM SITE. THEN IN LATE SPRING IT POPPED THRU THE GROUND AND IS LOADED WITH FRUIT.

IT IS LATER THEN LAST YEAR AND THIS YEAR THERE IS PROBABALY ONLY 35 INSTEAD OF 45 OR 50 AND THEY ARE A TAD BIT SMALLER.

HERE IS THE REAL PROBLEM I WILL SEND THIS MAN SOME SEEDS FROM LAST YEAR. I AM LEAVING IN 6 DAYS FOR WASHINGTON STATE AND WILL BE GONE FOR AT LEAST 6 WEEKS.I WILL RETURN ABOUT THE MIDDLE OF DECEMBER. I AM THE ONLY GARDNER IN THE FAMILY SO THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THERE WILL BE ANYTHING LEFT. IF THERE IS I WILL HARVEST AND SEND THEM IT. i HAVE BEEN HOSPITALIZED 5 TIMES THIS YEAR FOR A LEAST A WEEK EACH TIME.
STOKE, CLOTS, SEIZURES, CELLULITES, GALL BLADDER SURGERY.

EVEN WITH THAT MY BUCKETS, ALL THINGS CONCIDERED, DID WELL! I AM A CONFIRMED BUCKET GARDEN GROWER ESPECIALLY WITH MY ADDED HEALTH RESTRICTIONS, AND I HAVE 4 HEATHY FIG TREES. HAD I BEEN HOME, THERE MIGHT HAVE BEEN MORE. OH WELL LIFE GOES ON ...TILL IT STOPS AND THEN IT DOESN'T MATTER LOL.

PLEASE RESPOND ABOUT THE PAPAYAS SO I CAN PASS ON THE INFORMATION
