Veggie grooming?

Posted by annafl z10a FL (My Page) on Sat, Nov 7, 09 at 21:04
| My tomatoes have yellow and brown leaves at the bottom of the plants. My beans have some yellow and brown leaves in the inner aspects of the vines where other leaves have covered them. My delicata squash has some old, browning leaves under newly formed, larger, taller leaves.
Is it a good idea to remove these older leaves or am I just opening up parts of the plant to infection by doing this? I have begun to do this squeamishly, but am afraid to continue unless I find out it's the right thing to do. What do you all do? Thanks.

| I pluck em off. They're pretty much useless and may be diseased. |

Anna I usually cut them off if they look brown or diseased, making sure using cutters with some cleaner like alcohol, hydrogen peroxide or a 1 part of bleach to 9 parts of water. Also cut them when not wet, so not to spread anything. All the veggies need some pruning at one time or another. Silvia |

| Thanks, Miranda and Silvia. I will only remove them if they are largely yellow or brown and will be careful about going from plant to plant. I actually have mostly been using my fingers to pinch them off. Will remember to only do one plant each time, or take some alcohol to wipe my garden scissors. Will make sure they are dry before pruning too. Miranda, I will also dispose of them right away in case they are diseased. Thanks again, ladies. Anna |

| If they're getting yellow, they are not providing for the plant. Doesen't matter whether it's disrease or old age - getting them out of there is a good idea. Good gardening! - Eileen |
