Staking small trees?

Posted by ladywingr 9b/10a SW FL (My Page) on

Oh boy, oh joy, we just planted (one week ago) 2 small trees and the wind keeps picking up. They have narrow bamboo canes supporting them now. The trunk diameter is about 1.5" on both trees, a duranta standard and a silver buttonwood standard. The duranta is about 4 feet tall and the buttonwood is about 5 1/2 feet tall.

Would you recommend adding more substantial staking until the winds subside? Is there a cetain wind speed when you would consider it? Am I better off not staking, and hoping that they just blow over instead of snap?

Thanks for any input,
Terri

The bamboo will eventually rot - 6 month, perhaps a year - when it does, go for Rebar and hammer it deep into the ground. That should hold your trees until they get strong enough to deal with the wind.
