Controlling a fern

I have a neighbor who planted some ferns around his oak last spring and he offered me a few of the recent sprouts. While I don't have any shady spots for ferns, I do have permission from the park manager to work in and 'beautyfy' the empty lot next to me which does have a young, mature oak (big enough to clear a house, but just barely). What gives me pause is that in the time since he put the ferns around his oak, they have spread rather aggressively. dropping spores beyond his concrete border and 'escaping' their confines. I am not sure on the fern type but it looks like the typical Boston ferns you see in stores. Does anyone know if ferns can be tamed and forced to stay where they were put and not take over a bed?
