Ha. We are going to do something similar. I have a young Pygmy Date, not nearly as big as the one pictured, that has been residing in a nursery pot for the past two years and I have had no ideas on where to put it in my landscape. So starting this year we are going to use it as our growing Christmas palm. I am going to paint a slightly larger planter to look festive and rest the Pygmy inside that. This way we don't have to worry about either setting up the fake tree or cleaning up after a dying tree and each year our Christmas palm will get larger and larger. It will be interesting to see how long it takes before we decide it is too big to move.
