Aspidistra. A very easy care plant that doesn't need much water. You can put it in the ground in semi shade if you are in south Florida and it will spread. To repot it I would take it out of the pot and bare root it. See if it pulls apart or if you need to cut it apart leaving as many roots as possible on each piece.

In a 6 in pot would I use one bare root or should several be grouped in a pot?

Be aware that if you plant this in the ground it will spread everywhere. It has spread all across my house and I'm having a dickens of a time eradicating it!

Sorry I didn't know how much it would spread. I just saw it used in a landscape bed in Jax for the first time last month. I always put 3 plants in a pot for good looks. I never had one of them.

Have the green and the variegated. Great filler, cold hardy, loves shade, mine spreads slowly.....not sure why.

When I see them around here, they are always used as a 'ring around the tree,' sometimes with, sometimes without a border. I've never had any in a pot either, not a plant I find interesting. House plant forum might be a better place to ask.

I know this as a cast iron plant and both my parents and I have it growing in our yards, the solid green, variegated, and spotted varieties. We've never had an issue with it spreading out of control or thinning it when it got too thick. When we want to thin it we just use a digging fork to pop some of the outer plants out of the ground and then use a sharp shovel or loppers to separate the plants into manageable clumps.
