I'll be chewin' on a Honeysuckle vine...

Buffett fans will recognize that line. But I've been curious for a while, just which kind of honeysuckle warrants chewing the vines? I remember growing up that I would pull the inner parts through the blossom to extract the sweet 'honey' at the bottom of the honeysuckle flowers in my neighborhood (now I realized that the vine we had behind our house was the Japanese Honeysuckle). But we never chewed on the vines.

Now, the song is about Key West, so if I had to hazard a guess, I would say he might be talking about Coral Honeysuckle as it is the only native honeysuckle to Florida (that I know of), though I don't know if its range extends to the Keys. However, it was written in 74 and if Japanese Honeysuckle had enough of a presence in South Carolina to have huge mounds of the stuff in the woods behind my house back in '77, it could have been present in the Keys as well.

So... any thoughts on which one he's singing about? Any vine chewers out there?
