Heating loving replacements for hostas?

I have tried (unsuccessfully) to grow hostas the last couple of years in a couple of different areas. They're so pretty, but I just can't seem to make them happy here in central Texas, so I am looking for other foliage plants that will work in the heat.

I have an area on either side of the walk to my front door that gets 1-2 hours or direct sunlight in the mid-to-late afternoon, and shade the rest of the day (it is an 8-ft long sidewalk that runs between two walls of the house--think bowling alley with walls on either side--with the open end facing west/southwest). I have considered putting lattice over the top to make it even shadier, considering it gets hot afternoon sun.

The soil is fairly decent sandy loam with compost added to about 12-18 inches, then clay. And since it is a fairly small area, I don't mind watering it often, if necessary.

What foliage plants would tolerate (maybe even like?) this environment? And with or without the extra shade of the lattice overhead?
