Care of helichrysum petiolare (licorice plant)?

Hi, all. I really love this plant, but have noticed that it gets woody and ragged looking.... In other cases, I've seen large plants that look full and healthy. What is the best way to care for this plant, and in particular, what needs to be done to keep it from getting sparse and wooddy? I'd like to plant some in a bed that gets some sun, but is mostly light shade.

Thanks!!
