Problem with Variegated Yucca

I planted 4 yellowish variegated yucca outdoors last fall. They appeared to be handling the cold and snow cover well, but this spring , the leaves have turned brown. Is this typical for yucca before sending out new growth? My instinct tells no, but I don't want to dig up prematurely. Any advice in helping these plants is appreciated.

Shelli, did the new or old growth turn brown? It's common for old leaves to brown, but not new..What's happening? Toni
