The power of varied / variegated foliage

A neighbor knocked on my door recently to invite me to pick any of her figs that I wanted. As we were talking, I noticed she kept looking at my potted porch plants and new bed in the front yard. As she was leaving, she said, "Your flowers look beautiful!" The thing is, there's only a few petunias, a couple zinnias, and some tiny forget-me-nots blooming in the whole area.

The "flowers" are several different Caladiums, Tradescantia pallida (purple heart,) Strobilanthes (persian shield), light green sweet potato vine basket, Sansevieria, spider plants in hanging baskets, several Dracaenas, several Coleus with yellow leaves, and some with maroon leaves, bell peppers, tomato plants, and interestingly foliaged flowers that haven't bloomed yet: Datura, cosmos.

If the leaves are pretty enough, people "see beautiful flowers."

I agree. I get the same comments because I garden for foilage color flowers are second because they are fleeting. Leaves are always present.
