Bringing a garden spike in for the winter

I would like to bring in some large garden spikes so I can out them out again next spring. Do I treat them like a house plant and put them where they get light and water them? Or do I plant them in a pot and put them in a dark basement where it is cool and not water them?

It would help to know what it is you are referring to....
If you don't know the name of a particular plant ask a neighbor or bring a sample to your local garden center.
