As a general rule, the drastic pruning tasks can be successfully carried during the summer. As winter is approaching I am a bit hesitate to encourage you to go ahead with this type of pruning. I don't think you will encounter any problems with just a nice light stimulant hair cut for now.

Just select a branch that has already grown too long and cut it down about 1/4 of it's total length. Let the plant do the rest of the new growth developing during the winter and then prune again next summer.

It will be most beneficial if the plant is growing in the strongest light possible if your plant is indoors.

Without a photograph your pruning partner is blind!
