Purple? smoke tree

Posted by shoot z5 IL (My Page) on

I recently purchased a smoke tree at Lowes that was labeled as purple and had a picture of a plant with all purple leaves. My plant however has green leaves. Is it possible that the fine folks at Lowes mislabeled (gasp). OR do purple smoke trees appear green as immature specimens. THanks for the input-shoot

Your tree could have been mislabeled, or it simply didn't get enough sunlight. Plant it where it'll get at least 1/2 day of sun, and in spring, if it's supposed to be purple, it will. Good luck.

Shoot, I also have one that doesn't get enough sun, starts out purple but fades fast. Like Kyplantjunkie said more sun will do the trick.

There are some different kinds of purple smoke tree plants. I've heard 'Grace' doesn't stay purple during the summer, it turns green with the heat. I have 'Royal Purple' and in mid summer the leaves do get a greenish purple. It gets sun from early morning until sunset. With the cooler weather now it is all purple or reddish purple. It's really beautiful in fall. Has yours turned back to puprle yet? If not, then not enough sun or it was mislabeled. I including a link for my smoke tree that was taken in June of 2003. It is a lot bigger now. It was very purple then, but when it got really hot it did change to a greenish purple.

Shoot, I can't remember where, but I read somewhere it's nearly impossibe buying a 'purple' smoke tree in IL.
I too bought a smoke tree, the label displayed purple leaves..it's green..got it at www.directgardens.com back in the mid-90's..it's over 8' tall, but I cut it back..I may even cut it down next spring.
Even though it's green, it's still a pretty tree, but I really don't want anymore shade in the yard. Toni

Lowe's has 8 foot tall specimens of this plant for sale for $86 today. I'm thinking of trimming off the lower branches and leaves to use this as a low natural canopy over my patio area. 3 trees would do nicely.

Has anyone else ever used Smoke Trees as a low canopy? Or if you can think of another tree that would do please let me know.

There are several different kinds and they change throughout the year and are effected by temperature and moisture conditions. Mine seem to look a little different each year depending on the weather.

I have two smoke trees appox 15 feet appart. 1 is full of
blooms and the other only show a few (1 or 2). Why is that?
The one that blooms is appox. 14 ft. tall and the other is
only appox. 10ft. They were planted at the same time. Could
it be that the smaller gets more shade from the Oak trees
that are appox 20ft from it? I'm truly puzzeled. Also I
have a 5yr old Magnolia that is centered between the Oaks. Very few blossoms. Too much shade?
