How about Persian shield (stobilanthes dyerianus)It's listed in the Hortiplex of this garden forum. I don't know how to yo link you to the picture or I would. Very pretty leaves, I know in my area it is used as an anual but can be brought in for the winter.

For really stunning colors in annuals try Coleus (check out link below). Or Alternanthera. There are red/pink leaved Cordylines and Canna 'Tropicana' and Ricinus 'Carmencita'.
You can buy small plants in spring and have huge plants within a short time to enjoy until late Fall.

Besides the plants above, I planted seed of a deep red sunflower which I really loved...wish I had noted the name.

Check out some of the other nurseries online...many will send you a catalog on request. I've already started my lists for next year, will start revising as new catalogs arrive, then will have to cut it by at least 2/3rds before I order...lol. josh
