Sun coleus -- need explanation

Everything I read about sun coleus says it must be propagated by cuttings. Why is this? Are the seed sterile? Or is it that sun coleus are so slow to go to seed that generally they don't produce seed in the growing season, thus they are usually propagated by cuttings?

Has anyone tried saving and planting seed from sun coleus varieties? What were your results?

I've collected seed from a flower bed containing only sun coleus. No other coleus varieties are near this bed, so the sun coleus has not cross polinated with any other variety.

I'm planning to plant the seed just to see what happens.
