Need unbiased opinion

I planted several "Gingerland" caladium this year, which were really pretty. The manager of the nursery where I bought them said I needn't bother digging them up and storing them over the winter if I didn't fertilize them this summer because they wouldn't grow that well next year. In your experience, do you find this to be true? The bulbs were only $1.50 each, but I'd still like to save them if it's worthwhile. Thanks.
