At a dollar fifty each I would certainly try digging them up and seeing if I couldn't overwinter them as dormant tubers. Many garden centers treat their plants as "throw-aways" and encourage others to do the same, that way they can keep selling you the same plants year after year without having to invest in new varieties. It kind of makes me mad.

I agree, dig them up. They might come back bigger and better each year.

Me thinks it's just one more of the tricks of the Consumer Society we live in.

i was told that they would not come back if left in the ground. my nursery told me to dig um up and store them cool and damp for the winter.Hope this helps.

I dig mine up and toss them in an empty pot in the garage. Come spring they're starting to sprout and I put them back in the ground.

Yes save them! There are bulbs that slowly go down hill such as Tulips(certain varieties)--but this is becasue of our climate! But a Tuber, unlike a bulb, does not have a preformed flower waiting to bloom--therefore all we really want is that small little point on the bulb to begin to grow! It will perform "just as good" granted you give it care! Your Nurseryman needs to call me so I can explain to him the difference between a bulb and a tuber--and maybe he'll think twice before giving incorrect info!

I'm completely lazy when it comes to digging up bulbs & tubers, thinking, "Ugh, they'll probably come back anyway!" Nope, nope, nope....I've only wasted my lovely caladiums. From now on? I'm diggin' those babies up!!

I think $1.50 per tuber is very cheap. We pay the same price for tuber or live plant, about $6-7.
