starting cold weather veggies?

I would like to start some outdoor cold weather veggies before my tomatoes are ready in March. any suggestions? I have semishade and about a 5'x4'area. I was thinking lettuce greens or cabbage, maybe sugar snap peas. Maybe radishes and beets, but we will still have some hard frosts. Will these survive? Are there better veggies I could try?

Up north we plant peas as soon as the soil can be worked in spring. The peas will get snowed on etc. The key to growing peas is getting them to mature before the heat of summer sets in. The others you mentioned would be planted in late spring but early enough so lettuce does not bolt or sour from the heat.A good book should help you find your best plant dates.
