Four Season Vegetable Gardening

Vegetables in cold frames

Hello,

I am getting ready to build my first-ever cold frame, and have plans to start tomatoes, herbs and butternut and yellow squash in them. I am wondering how soon I can start these seeds in my cold frames. I live in southeast PA. As a guideline, I start potatoes and lettuce around St. Patty's Day.

I have had my budget cold frames for a few years now. They are great. I have generally focused on extending summer crops. but my thinking is this -Seeds are actually pretty smart they will only germinate when it's warm enough for them to survive. I think April 1st I'd Start my summer heat loving varieties in your mini hot houses. That way you should be ok for a May move to the outside. Be careful to monitor the heat May can warm up fast....happy growing
