I have grown them in pots before just snipping the green tips off when I need them as a continual harvest. But I grew them outside. I guess if you could keep the light up to them then you should be able to do it. I say give it a go and see what happens!

i also grow mine outside and they get huge (2 feet tall) and have these tennis ball sized flowers.

Awe215, It is defiitely possible to grow onions, garlic, shallots etc in a pot indoors during the winter. I do this every year along with tomatoes and peppers. I have a south facing window and sometimes augment with a bright compact flourescent bulb. I rarely have to use the light. I harvest the greens from the scallions and eventually the bulbs. The tomatoes taste amazing on a cold snowy January morning. I even have a few videos showing all of this in case you're interested. Winter indoor gardening is absolutely fun! It brings a bit of summer inside. :)

Definitely grow some onions. If you can find sets you can grow green onions from them on a sunny window sill. You can grow seeds for the green tops. They may not really mature into big onions, but the tops are great. Another option is chives. Mild onion flavor with very little light needed. I grow onions in my sunroom all winter. I buy extra sets late in the year and keep them refrigerated and just plant a set each time I pull one. I have cheap green onions all year.
