Harry carrots

Is it normal for overwintered carrots to develop a HAIRY root? I have tremendous top growth, but puny (ridiculous) roots. Yes they are a bit crowded. Soil is heavy, heavy clay. Couple different cultivars, same difference for all.

Largest so far is medium thumb size, I was really expecting longer carrots....

RE: Harry carrots

Carrots are bi-annuals and become woody and put on seeds the second year. You need to amend your soil as they don't like having to try to put down roots through hard soil. At least loosen up the soil if you don't add a amendment

RE: Harry carrots

Thank you.
Bottom line sounds like use sooner rather than later and don't bother overwintering carrots - bummer!
