what does it mean when onions flower

Im in zone 9, I planted them back in november.Just a white sweet type of onion. Some of them just started to flower. I pulled one up and they are pretty close to being ready..I think. This is my first time growing onions. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Let me grow?
can i cut the flower off?
Whats the proper way to harvest them?

    I would cut the flower off so they continue to put energy into the onion.
