I am new to gardening this year and I have been doing pretty well with my raised beds this summer so I'm hoping to do some crops for the fall/winter...I looked up some stuff and saw that you can sow seeds for Broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, garlic, chives and lettuces in the fall/winter. Does this sound right? And does that mean that you put the seeds in and it will grow and be harvested in the winter or you put the seeds in fall/winter and the plants grow and establish roots so they get a jump start come spring?
I guess I'm just confused and would like anyones comments on plants they have had success/disappointment growing during the fall/winters in MA. I have a raised bed 4x8 and multiple 75 lb containers that I use for growing my plants.
The only thing I know for sure is parsnips, you dig them up in the spring at the first thaw. We use to fry them, very sweet like a carrot. My children loved them.
You should be able to sow most of them now for fall harvest. I am also just starting to learn about this in zone 5. I like this site for listing of what to plant when.
