i have just replanted some of my small spring potatoes that showed sprouts.it's is an experiment so we'll see what happens.i have read about "irish" potaoes for fall crops...mine are red pontiac.i'm going to throw in some pea pod seeds for fall also.i read about just growing them for greens as they have the nice pea flavor.should be interesting.i may even toss in some snap peas.maybe bugs are a bigger problem in the fall.i live on the n.c. piedmont.

Pumpkins grow in the summer and mature in the fall. They take a long season, and don't get orange until they get ripe. I live in SoCal and have several volunteers that sprouted last spring with the summer squash. They have been getting orange for several weeks now. We still have summer weather, high 90's. It is a real trick to keep those pumpkins until halloween. They get very soft by 10/01, and rot by 10/15. This year I will try keeping them in the garage where it is a bit cooler.

Around here, fall is the best time to plant potatoes. Store bot works, but takes about a month to get them sprouted in the house. They are treated to PREVENT sprouting. Place them in a closed paper back with a ripe apple for about a week, then leave them in the light. This helped my taters get started. I will be planting them soon. Most are sprouting, 2 or 3 are rotting instead. Last year I tried the purple potatoes and they grew fine. This year have white and red and purple all sprouting.

I'm trying fall potatoes by default -- the bed I planted hasn't gotten regular water, so the pieces are sitting tight. I expect they'll sprout shortly after the first of the regular rains. So I guess I'll find out.

Pumpkins, like any squash, are a heat-loving veggie.... start them next spring for your next fall display. :)
