Cold frame materials

Good evening all,

I have been impressed enough by Eliot Coleman's "Four-Season Harvest" to begin construction of two cold frames. I am seeking advice on what type of material to use for the top covering on the frames. I need to do this on a budget and I should also note I am in the Northeast region so winter weather, including snow, is an issue.

I was quoted a price of $45.00 for a 4' x 8Â sheet of Plexiglas, which is within my budget and would provide for an entire cold frame (this price includes cutting the material into four 2'x 4' sheets). If need be, I can run some supports under the Plexiglas to give it more rigidity.

I also received a quote on a 4'x8' sheet of one of the double-layered, more rigid, better insulating greenhouse materials for $85.00, which is pushing the limit for me financially.

There is also glass and tempered glass, which Coleman seems to favor.

Anyone who has experience with cold frames and can offer advantages or drawbacks for the use of any of the above materials, I would very much appreciate it. Thanks.
