 o
cucumber question

I planted some burpless cukes, up until the past several days the plants were green and full of bloom and I have a number of cukes growing. For the past few days the plants are standing up in the AM but, when the sun comes out the plants wither. It has not been to hot here in my area (Western Maryland), so I wonder if they should be planted in a shaded area, as to being planted where they receive full sun all day.

Thanks in advance

RE: cucumber question

By now I suspect your cukes are either dead or doing better. Sorry you haven't had a response before this. I don't visit this forum often but will start doing so.

Cucumbers often exhibit water stress in the heat of the day. If they are reviving overnight and look good in the morning, it is most likely not enough moisture. Water them deeply a couple of times a week, in the morning so the leaves will dry off quickly. The soil should be good and moist (not soupy wet) to a depth of at least 6" when you finish each watering. Use a trowel or other digging tool to check to be sure you've watered enough. Light waterings that just sprinkle the top of the soil are not good for the plants, causing them to be shallow rooted and more subject to wilting in the heat.

Hope you have managed to keep them alive. Good luck.

Sandy
