Winter vegetable gardening

I'm wanting to try my hand at vegetable gardening for the first time. In Northern CA our first frost date will be in Nov. so I have some time but as temperatures are in the 100s now and super dry I'll try to start everything indoors first. I want to do spinach, lettuce, broccoli, peas, kale... Anyone have more ideas for winter veggies and fruits?

You could do some herbs like basil and parsley :)

Unlike most herbs, basil is not cold hardy.

My first frost is also November. In addition to the ones you listed above. I just started potatoes, beets and carrots. If you start today and mother nature doesn't throw and early frost your way, you can probably squeeze in pumkins (a smaller variety) and winter squash.

Sorry I didn't see this sooner, but I am also in N Cal, and for fall/winter/spring I do sugar snap peas, fava beans, garlic, shallots, and greens like mustard, collard, kale, sorrel, chard, and herbs like parsley and cilantro. I also try potatoes but it doesn't usualy work.
