When is the best time to plant white, yellow or purple onions? I've had little sucess. They grow to the size of spring onions and stop. Same thing happened with the garlic I planted. Just stop growing at a certain point.

You have very particular growing conditions there in Calif. It could be the type of onion, the time of planting, or something else. I used to grow onions and garlic in Oakland with a lot of success and my best resource was the book Golden Gate Gardening. I recommend you try that book, or in any case seek out a resource specific to gardening in your area, such as a good nursery.

Thank you, I will try B&N for that book. I live over the hill from Oakland, just the other side of the Caldacot. I would think I have perfect growing conditions.
