My first time out I had astonishingly good success with exactly the same setup you described. 4 tier shelf and cheap shop lights above each shelf. It worked well for broccoli and peas which is all I tried the first time. But I wanted larger microgreens so that I could harvest from 2 weeks through a couple of months and the shop lights weren't strong enough for that, at least in my case.
I've upgraded to multiple (eight) compact fluorescent bulbs with incandescent equivalencies of 100 and 200 watts to see how that goes so the plants don't get so leggy after a month of growth.
Youtube has abundant videos on growning microgreens under lights. I just spent a few days going through them. Try those.

I started 1 shelf (48'' x 24'') with cheap lights: a 4â double fixture with 2 x âÂÂâÂÂGro-Lux OctronâÂÂâ 32W bulbs. About $60, altogether. I got a bag of relatively expensive potting soil (lawn repair) to get going and so far germination and growth look good, but IâÂÂll experiment with cheaper media. (IâÂÂm also intrigued by the idea of pumice or germination mats so you can also eat the roots, but I guess theyâÂÂre only good for sprouts? And I donâÂÂt want to go hydroponic. Anyway, no rush to get into that.) IâÂÂve also been viewing some YouTube videos. Though not as many as you so far. One mentioned using a top layer of vermiculite to enhance germination. What do you think? After my mustard and sunflowers IâÂÂve just started some peas, maybe too dense though. I covered the whole surface, as MumâÂÂs recommended for sprouting, so it will be a fairly expensive crop. Have you come across any good sources for the nutritional values of different spp.?
