Mary Washington is a very popular open-pollinated cultivar. I like that and Sweet Purple. Can't help with a supplier though, being from a different part of the world.

The Jersey series--Jersey King, Jersey Knight (I think that last name is correct)are sterile males so you won't have to deal with weeding out seedlings.

Park Seed co. sells Jersey Knight Hybrid seeds. They can be found at www.Parkseed.com. I don't know much about this type of asparagus since I just recently ordered my first set of seeds from Park.

Around here (Raleigh) all the garden centers sell the same variety of roots so there ain't much to choose from. I will say that last year I got lazy and left my roots in a corner of the shed for over a month and when I found them again I thought for sure they were rotted and/or dried out. But I planted them anyway and every one of them eventually made a plant. Don't give up - these are very tough plants. Most garden centers carry them in late winter/early spring whenever they get in strawberry plants.

If you decide on one of the jersey all-male hybrids. You can buy directly from Jersey asparagus farms. They hold the seed rights to all Jersey male hybrid asparagus varieties.
