Great eating in December

| Although they were planted later than I wanted, the collards, kale, cabbage, spinach, and lettuce have really come on in the last few weeks. The new homemade automatic coldframes have been sheltering the lettuce and spinach and they never looked better. Even the extra lettuce transplants that would not fit in the coldframe have done well under row covers and clear plastic. It's hit 15 here a couple of times and the 2.5 gallon jugs of water under the row covers have helped buffer the biting cold. I have the lettuce coldframe's soil heated with a cable and the red romaine, buttercrunch, Four Seasons, and Red Sails have had a happy life. Even the stupid deer have not bothered anything... yet. I was not up to the task health-wise, but now I wish I'd planted more carrots per the Eliot Coleman book. Next year, perhaps a greenhouse! |

| I just harvested my first salad from my coldframe yesterday. What a treat! I planted bowls of arugula, chard, spinach and mache in early October. It took a little while for them to kick in, but now I have plenty to snip for the next few weeks while waiting for newly-sown bowls of greens to grow. At first I thought my little coldframe was going to be a bust, but now I'm glad I set it up! |

Kathicville, can you send a picture , or describe these "bowls" you have planted? I have lettuce and chard outside, but we've had alot of frost this year for our area (low 20s) I have a green house for the first time this year and am getting ready to start seeds. I'd like to do some winter stuff to finish up the spring before I plant out the summer stuff. Any suggestions appreciated! Nancy |

| Because of the late summer heat I had difficulty getting things started for the cool season and didn't get much harvest during the winter, but once things warmed up a bit I had an excellent collards harvest, also spinach (still going strong) green onions and broccoli and beets and carrots. Planted a lot of garlic - some of it will mature into bulbs, some is planted very close together and I'm harvesting it green. |
