| Repotting a daphne I just got from the nursery (Home Depot, not a fancy place), I find just under the main stem a mass of translucent yellow 'pearls.'
Are these some sort of baaaad insect lavae, goood larvae or a man-made aid to the roots or something?
Carefully scraped them off, replace ALL the soil and potted. Plant seems fine.
What was that stuff and should I put it back? |

| Not a fancy place, not a nursery. Slug eggs? Osmocote? |

| Kasie....you can grow gardenia and jasmine. I'm sure I'd trade Daphne for either of those. (though I am going to try a gardenia next year in my garden!) ~Chills <---in Michigan |

| Thanks for the messages. My repotted Daphne, sans 'pearls,' is doing GGGGGreat! Putting out lots of new leaves, even lower down on the stem -- already looking like a bush. Not bad for $7. Speaking of gardenia, I don't know why the message thread of suicidal gardenia is so popular. I stuck some of the pruned tips in soil last summer and now I have about 6 little gardenias (Veitchii). |

| Probably because you're not trying to move a potted gardenia in and out of the house year after year hoping to trick it into believing that it doesn't live in a cold climate. I've got one, a Mystery Gardenia, that I have had for 3 years. Each year it looks great until just after the first of the year and then it starts browning out from the bottom up. As long as I get it outside before all the leaves die, it makes a complete come back (though this one has not bloomed for me yet). I had another that managed the move for 3 years (and bloomed), but one year it browned right to the top and (even though the stem still scratched green) it died. Mehetabelle...the pearls were depleated Osmocote, a time release fertilizer encased in a degradable shell. I like to pop them, personally. ~Chills |
