Has anyone experienced the fragrance of shrub peony Festiva Maxima? How would you describe it?

Beautiful fragrance, and not faint either. It's a very vigorous grower.

Thank you. I am so glad to know this. Would you describe the fragrance as sweet or lemony or spicy or...?

RE: Fragrance of Peony Festiva Maxima

Not spicy. Not lemony. I have an unknown red one that is spicy. I'd just call it a strong peony fragrance. It's been around since the 1800's. Oldie but very Goody. It starts blooming here the first week in June, and the last smaller buds open by the end of the month. Blooms longer than any other I have, but I've had it longer than most of my others. I love it
(Needs to be staked or caged once the flowers start to open. It always seems to rain hard after, not before the flowers open, and they are big and will topple the plant if not staked)

I would also say it has a strong "peony" fragrance. It is like a coarse rose fragrance with an undertone of ammonia. That sounds weird, I know, but to me it is one of the most pleasant and addictive of all floral odors. The only other flower I know of that smells just like it is Neomarica gracilis.

Thank you both for explaining the fragrance-type.

Have either of you any experience with a tree peony: Ezra Pound? This variety was described as being the most fragrant among tree peonies.
