Oh, I have been looking for Rhododendron arborescens for a few weeks now, ever since I smelled Rhododendron canescens at the Arkansas Flower and Garden show. Do you have rooted cuttings of this plant? Does it come up from seed? Do you have seedlings, or even just seeds? If you have extra Rhododendron rooted cuttings would you be willing to trade them for something? I have a gardenia shrub doing great in the backyard. I take cuttings every Summer and root them in water. I would be happy to trade you a gardenia cutting for a very fragrant Rhododendron arborescens. We just would have to wait until summer if you want a rooted one.

I'm also looking for Rhododendron austrinum, eastmanii, albamese, and others that are fragrant. Do you have other native azaleas, and which ones are most fragrant?

Crb..I had no idea Rhodo's were fragrant. Do you know their hardiness zone?
For some reason, I can keep Azaleas (indoors) but kill Rhodos. lol. What am I doing wrong?

most of our deciduous Rhododendrons are quite hardy maybe 5 and 6? saw one in upstate NY. i have been trying to grow these plants for 2 years now and am having a hard time (they seem to rot during the winter) there are two nurseries that sell the rarer types (that i know about)

R. canescens and austrium are easy to root, but most others are not. oh, there is a northern form of arborescens that might be common in nurseries up north... it is very similar but blooms in may-june instead of july and august, also its leaves don't have hairs like the southern form.
