Hello Forum,

I have just purchased my first home and I am planning on establishing a fragrant subtropical garden around the outdoor living areas. I have already purchased a number of fragrant roses, rock orchids, gingers, plumeria, citrus, stephanotis as well as 8 magolias/michelias.

I have M. figo, M. "coco", M. "lady of th night" and Magnolia dianica (M. Yunnanensis) and Magnolia Little Gem, all of which are in 12" black plastic pots.Because of our alkaline sandy soild, I have reisgned to grow the magnolias in large tubs. My question is, how large should these be? They are currently all in 12" black plastic pots.

Thanks,
Adam

Others can say how big they eventually need to be, but for right now, I wouldn't pot them in anything larger than 16-18". Overpotting leads to wet soil and a real risk of root rot. You gotta let these babies grow up before they can wear adult pots!
