Northern Wysteria, Not Blooming

Posted by joannahogan Minnesota (My Page) on

I purchased 2 Northern Wysteria several years ago and the plants themselves are flourishing well. However, even with the beautiful climbing folage I can't seem to get them to bloom. Right now they budding throughout the vines top to bottom, but I have never gotten anything that even appears to be a "bloom". Please help as I know I must be doing something wrong. I believe it is a Blue Moon, Wistera (but not positive). I believe the tag stated Northern Wysteria. I have actually two plants with a western exposure which get plenty of sun during the summer from April thru late September. Thank you.

From what I know about wisteria, to get them to bloom, they recommend braiding the vines because this restricts them as they get older. You may also try to root prune them (by sticking a shovel into the dirt about a foot or 2 away from the plant), which cuts down on the nutrients. If they have good soil, they'll have a lot of leaves and no flowers. Hope this helps!

It is common for Wisteria not to bloom when young. Make sure you aren't using a high nitrogen fertilizer which will make their natural tendency worse.
