Heliotrope question

Just bought some H.arborescens 'Compact Marino' today.. I needed to fill in a large planter with a fragrant purple ... similar to ageratum in color and size... when the nursery called to say they couldn't fill the rest of my order. I was hoping for evergreen and never even thought to ask about that before I purchased them. Annuals? Hope to keep them going for a while. Anyone know if they survive well enough year to year? This is zone 8...near Austin, TX.
Thanks, FFR |

| Heliotrope isn't hardy to zone 8; below 40 degrees it will not be happy -- you could take cuttings in the fall and try to keep them going indoors during winter, but new plants aren't that expensive, and they should be available at nurseries outside the city. As for what else to plant, I'd vote for something white-flowered, and I tend to prefer perennials so I don't have to keep planting 'em year after year . . . Jim |
