Any plant where they say half hardy or only grown outside in the uk in mild areas! really means you can only grow it outside here, in the likes of cornwall south coast etc and then in a sheltered position any where else its going to need some kind of winter protection! It is not always the cold that kills it but the combination of the prolonged cold and wet!! is the killer!! if its in the ground its going need excellent drainage so its not sitting in wet soil all winter trachelospermum is very susceptile to Phytophthora root rot. also you want it in a sheltered position that is protected from cold winter winds does well in John Innes No.2
