Replacing a white pine with lilac

A young but growing white pine is beginning to shade my vegetable garden. I'd like to replace it with a smaller variety of lilac bush, but I don't know much about what the pine is likely to have done to the soil, what problems it might cause for the lilac or what I can do to correct it. The pine is about 12 years old. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Lilacs like alkaline soil, so adding a bit of lime to the soil when you plant it and giving it some more annually can help, as well as raking away the fallen pine needles before you plant. Other than that, I don't see a problem unless your soil is naturally very acidic -- get a cheap PH test kit and check the soil in a couple of places.
