mockorange so-o-o-o-o slow to grow!!!

I have an Innocence Mockorange that is basically a "growing stick"! It just gets taller and taller (about 4 years old) but I can NOT get it to branch. I have tried to prune the center but it just grew back exactly like before - 1 stick going straight up. It has a few lanky branches . . . but the width of this bush is like 14" or so. It does get some blooms every year but not prolific.

Could I possibly have it in too much shade? Could that affect it's spreading? It is in the bottom of my yard - could too much wetness affect it?

Thank you for any help. :o)

Jennifer1,

I thought I'd sent a reply, but it's not appearing -- it sounds like there's some root problems, maybe due to poor drainage, or that, like you said, it's not getting enough sun. How many hours of direct sun does it receive? I wouldn't advise digging it up just to check the roots yet, but is the ground around it always wet, or are there flooded areas nearby after it rains?

Hope this helps,

Jim
