Kicking the gardenia OUT!

My gardenia vetchii was full of promising buds when I bought it, but one by one they dropped off, unopened. I've finally had it. I took it out of the pot, set it in the ground and gave it a lecture. "If you behave this summer and bloom, then I'll bring you in for the winter. If not, I'm leaving you here to die!" Do you think it will work? What are the chances it will bloom this summer, considering it already dropped all its buds? It's sited in a prime spot, morning sun, afternoon shade, very nice soil that's full of compost. It's going to get a lot of moisture too, since it's in with the hydrangeas and impatiens, two well-behaved plants that DON'T drive me crazy.
